{"id":15296,"date":"2014-03-13T06:31:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T10:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hame.ink\/hameblog\/2014\/03\/13\/long-live-dead-trees\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T07:50:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T10:50:11","slug":"long-live-dead-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hame.ink\/blether\/2014\/03\/13\/long-live-dead-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Long live dead trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the weekend, stopping over in Inverness on the way home, we went to Waterstones bookstore, and there were two books we picked up and deliberately bought the hardcover versions of, specifically because:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We wanted to support a physical bookstore (even though we could probably have got the books cheaper online).<\/li>\n<li>There was something undeniably more pleasurable about the feel and the mechanics of a hardcovers in the hands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My sketchbook is hard-backed, and there is something elevating about having my work in-between those boards.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the books are Ruby Wax&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rubywax.net\/sane-new-world.html\">Sane New World<\/a> and Alain de Botton&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/alaindebotton.com\/news-users-manual\">The News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height:1.3em\">Last night found us sanding down the new yard-arm for the Isabella Fortuna (the 40-ton sailing ship I accidentally hit a shark with).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-TSHnAy0r6iY\/UyGLAuDhD1I\/AAAAAAAAG5k\/S7TRQyY54wQ\/s2005\/Photo%25252020140313103955%252520am.jpg.webp\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em\"><\/p>\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hame.ink\/blether\/wp-content\/uploads\/posts\/1409\/long-live-dead-trees02.jpg.webp\" id=\"blogsy-1394707216660.3022\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\"><\/figure>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height:1.3em\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>We learned a lot about sailing terms (a surprising number of which have come into common parlance), and&#8230; We sanded. For a long time.
