  • From a Letter to a Comics Club Friend

I saw Solo last night with a buddy from high school band and his family.

It was fun enough, but… pointless. Lifeless. It was nobody’s private vision; a fanboy grocery list fulfilled by a committee.

    sigh

By contrast, I got a monthly wee comic zine from Liz Prince (Tomboy) in the post as a Patreon fulfillment thing. She makes them herself, and they’re simple, cute, raw, and real.

There’s room for both in life — the big, dumb fun commercial culture and the DIY personal work — but give me more of the latter.

  • Stout Snout

Doug’s nose is turning black again. Light-coloured dogs like him, I learned, can get “winter nose” — their nose turns pink. (It’s harmless; must just be a melanin thing.)

P.S. I’ve been drawing a lot. At first I wasn’t posting that material here because it was too raw and unresolved. Now it’s a matter of bulk scanning.

  • A Tale of a Fateful Trip

I wanted to draw something today other than diary comix, so I went back to a dream I had a few years ago:

In the dream, the castaways from Gilligan’s Island never got off the island (I guess the movies didn’t count), so eventually they had to face watching each other die off one by one.

    Sweet dreams, eh?

  • Dougiversary

I won’t report on what’s happening at the hospital with Dad right now because the situation is so changing, uncertain, and — yeah, it’s stuff to live personally right now, not blog content.

Craig and I did, however, have something to celebrate on Sunday:

We also bought him a frosted dog cookie, which he licked and pawed but wouldn’t eat in the car. He waited till he got it home, ran out into the back yard, and buried it in the dirt. Yum!

The top part is yesterday, the bake-y bit today.

  • There is No Magic Pen

Tyler teases me about the Magic Pen

I’ve gotta say, I really love this group of people. We have such a laugh every week, but it’s like artist therapy, too!

Afterward, I met Craig, who was out for a drink with a new friend! Of his own!

In the ambulance the other day, the driver/paramedic and I chatted as we drove to the Prince Edward Home. He said he hated it here at first and wanted out — it was so isolating, being a Person From Away, but now he loves it here. So this is a common thing.

    April 22 diary comic

P.S. Those markers are still way too dark. Can’t fix ‘em. Bad purchases are heartbreaking. The only thing that makes them better is finding someone to give the thing(s) to who’ll be able to use them.
